Semat forum theatre training - Jakarka & Bogor, Indonesia - January 2006
Semat is a youth theatre company based in Jakarta who, supported by search for common ground, came together to work on issues of communal and inter-communal conflict. We were asked to provide training in developing and devising theatre intervention work to empower semat to work within their own communities in developing peace building activities. We ran a 5-day residential course in Bogor with workshops on researching, designing, planning and delivering work. The young people were guided through the process of creating, performing and facilitating their own interactive performance and workshop for an audience. The show explored the story of a young woman puket, who was struggling with trying to please her family and community whilst attempting to achieve her own ambitions.
We also provided training for search for common ground staff in facilitating young people to create theatre and conflict management work. Through practical workshops, the training focused on forum theatre and how drama and creative exercises can be used to open discussions and encourage learning. We also explored how to extend a current peace-building intercommunity comic book project through drama workshops in order research issues for future comics and help young people explore these issues further.
