Face Value
(1996 - 1998 - Nationwide)
Face Value was a performance, workshop & training programme developed in conjunction with Exeter University which toured psychiatric institutions, prisons, young offenders centres & schools looking at issues around self esteem. The project manifested itself as a series of unfolding scenes detailing incidents & challenges in the lives of two young protagonists, Harry & Sarah. In these scenes participants not only got to view the “objective reality” of the situations these characters were in, but also to see the internal subjective reality, & the series of “Pathological Critical Voices” - the “Comparer”, “Mind Reader” & “Labeller” which influence behaviour. These scenes were indispersed with a cognitive programme of drama & arts work in which participants tried to both understand & advise the characters, in an ongoing “soap opera” type performance. This work explored the origins of self image & examined the “positive pay offs” that exist alongside the negative influences of those critical voices that make our internal worlds so complex & meaningful behavioural change so difficult.

“Face Value changed the way I rationalise the problems I face day to day. The workshop made difficult subject matter fun & you were able to absorb all relevant material in an interesting way”
